Training for different Gundog Breeds
We now have several breeds attending our training sessions, from Labradors, Golden Retrievers, Flat Coat Retrievers, Irish Water Spaniels, English Springer Spaniels, Welsh Springer Spaniels, Cocker Spaniels and supporting the HPR Breeds we have a Italian Spinone, Weimaraner, Vizsla, Hungarian Wire Haired Vizsla and German Wire Haired and Short Haired Pointers.
If you are thinking of buying a gundog come and visit us it would be beneficial for both if you could spend time learning about the breed prior to purchasing or booking a pup from a breeder.
Obviously each breed is bred for various roles within the shooting environment, if you only shoot from a peg or enjoy wildfowling then a Labrador would suit. But if you carry out beating tasks and Rough shoot then a spaniel may be your ideal dog. But never dismiss the faithful HPR breeds as they really come into their own when out on grouse moor or large arable areas.
Retrievers, Labrador,Golden Retriever,Flat Coat
& Irish Water Spaniel
Retrievers
All our Retrievers are trained to a structured program from basic obedience of heel, sit, stay & a simple dummy retrieve, advancing to a fully trained gundog who will retrieve dead and wounded game birds from Snipe to Canada Geese, over a variety of covers both short and long distance negotiating obstacles such as fences, walls and rivers.
Retrievers can be specially trained for the peg on driven shoots, or walked up if rough shooting, wildfowling, picking up or the beating line.
Spaniels
Spaniels, Springer, Cocker, Welsh
All our Spaniels are trained with a structured approach from basic obedience of heel, sit & stay with a simple dummy retrieve and willingness to hunt away from handler, through to flushing and retrieving game birds in difficult cover either for the beating line or walked up rough shooting.
Most Spaniels we see, have been allowed too much self employed exercise, such that they become confident without the rules, Owners inadvertantly allow free exercise believing it to be in the best interest of the dog.
Its only over time owners, they learn it is not !

HPRs
Our HPRs are trained with a similar structured approach to basic obedience and hunting, it is our experience the majority of these breeds are far more sensitive, and require a far greater degree of patience to acquire a level of working ability which naturally flows, sometimes this means deferring certain aspects of training, awaiting greater maturity. We often find that switching from obediance work to hunting work during times of difficulty works very well, but you need to have an experienced trainer to help you with those decisions?
